We moved to this area of France in 2013 and have been running a successful holiday business here since then.

They decided to start a new adventure in the beautiful part of France after travelling from Devon, where they had also rented out the barn conversion they had built themselves.

Having visited the Dordogne many times, they chose this area because of its beauty, rolling hills, and relaxed way of life. The better weather was also a big draw to this part of France, as having previously lived on the edge of Exmoor, rain was something of a regular occurrence.

After moving here, they started cycling on a more regular basis. It’s a great way to see the countryside. Craig then went on to complete the Lands End to John O’Groats Trail shortly after the move, cementing his passion for cycling.

We love to share our home and show people what this area has to offer, whether it be cycling, walking, visiting the many markets, or just enjoying the relaxed way of life and the many restaurants on offer here.

We love the rural and relaxed nature of the northwestern Dordogne, and we can't recommend it highly enough to you. In fact, we loved it so much, we moved here!

HISTORY / CULTURE

A perfect area

This region of the Dordogne is the perfect location for cycling with its varied terrain and rolling hills.

With almost traffic-free roads, it makes for an enjoyable experience. With a wide variety of climbs and descents, combined with more level routes running along the Dronne River, it is ideal for either experienced cyclists or beginners. We are located in the north-west Dordogne, near the Charente, which leads to one of France’s Plus Beaux Villages, Aubeterre. This ancient village set up high above the river with its 11th-century church, which is the oldest in France, is a perfect place to dine or just wonder around the pretty shops. In the opposite direction, we have Brantome.

A fortified town known as “the Venice of the Perigord” as it is surrounded by the Dronne river. It is also very pretty, with many restaurants, shops, and cafes, as well as the old monastery and church. It is the perfect place to cycle to and stop by the river for a picnic before setting off again.

The Dordogne region of southwest France is one of the most beautiful and popular destinations in the country. Visit this beautiful region of France and discover the chateaux, beautiful mediaeval towns and villages, unspoiled countryside, and prehistoric caves—just some of the many reasons why the region attracts visitors.

There are many “famous sights” that we associate with the Dordogne, including Lascaux caves, Marqueyssac gardens, mediaeval Sarlat, castles such as Chateau Castelnaud, and the prehistoric caves in the Vezere Valley.

Yet it is the places that you visit outside of these “hot spots” that will stay longest in your memory: the scenery, the peace, the coffee in a small cafe, the picnic next to a stream.

The Dordogne is beautiful in the same way that the Cotswolds or Tuscany are beautiful—it makes you want to stay forever and enjoy the peace, countryside, and scenery… Some of the other best known highlights include the Gouffre de Padirac caves and canoeing the Dordogne, with the most popular towns and villages including Bergerac, Brantome, Excideuil, Saint Emilion, Riberac, and Rocamadour.
